When the opponents open a 5-card major, it is unlikely that we would ever want to play in that suit. The same is usually true in a minor. So a direct bid of their suit should have some other meaning. While there are other, perhaps more superior uses for the direct cuebid of the opponent’s suit, the most popular use of a direct cue bid is as a Michaels cuebid. The direct cuebid of the opponent's opened suit shows 5/5+ -card distribution.
